This is the first post in my new website/blog. Welcome!
While I’ve experimented with setting up a blog in the past, the services I’ve tried were never very satisfactory. Too much cut & paste, for both the author and the reader (if code is involved)… limited customization… too much risk / lack of control of the platform changing or going away…
I’ve always liked the notebook style of communication… annotating code with rich text, mathematical equations, and more… and the creativity of building solutions from constantly evolving, interoperable components.
Given that background, here is the tech stack I’m trying out. I’m sure they will evolve over time…
- Pixi a relatively new package management tool for reproducible environments. It leverages the conda ecosystem, so most of the packages I want to use are already available.
- Quarto “An open-source scientific and technical publishing system” with notebook-style authoring.
- Python Geospatial Libraries far too many to list here!
- GitHub Pages a static site hosting service.
Even though some1 of these components are new and experimental, I’m fine with that. Living on the edge is exciting, and I value the flexibility they provide.
Starting with this setup, I plan to post about things that interest me… geospatial data, cloud native data & analysis, transitioning research into practice, open source development, addressing sustainability issues, and just exploring the incredible world we live in…
